Walking with Walker

Purpose:

To increase mobility with a balance aid.

Directions:

Hold the handgrips and move the walker forward a short distance (around 6-12 inches). Using the walker for support, take a step to the middle area of the walker. If you have a weak or injured leg, step with that leg first. Then, step forward with the other leg.

Important:

  • Make sure the walker is properly fit to the child’s size/height. Have the child stand with normal posture and relax their arms at their sides. Adjust the walker's hand grips to be at wrist-level. When the child rests their hands on the hand grips, their elbows should be slightly bent.

  • Look straight ahead when walking.

  • Keep the walker close for support.

  • Be careful around uneven surfaces, rugs, pets, and small children.

  • Do not rely on your walking aid to stand up or sit down; the walker will tip over. Use the armrests from a chair to help stand and sit.
