Ascending/Descending Stairs

Purpose:

To encourage upper/lower body coordination, postural control, and balance/safety awareness. 

Directions:

Complete 10 repetitions (ascend and descend the steps) once a day. Have child reach out to hold onto railing.  

Recommendations:  

  • Complete exercises slowly 

  • Decrease hands-on assistance over time (have child try to initiate and hold movement on their own) 

Assist child with hands-on support at hips or free arm to walk up and down the stairs.

Have child take one step at a time.
