Floor to Stand Through Half Kneel

Purpose:

Helps develop functional strength, stability, and motor control.

Directions:

  • Start in a kneeling position with both knees on the ground

  • Assisting the child as needed have the child bring one foot forward, placing it flat on the ground so the knee is directly over the ankle

  • Encourage the child to tighten their tummy muscles (core) and place their hands on their hips, on their knee, or use a low, sturdy support (like a couch or ottoman) if necessary.

  • Have the child drive down through their front heel, engaging the glutes, and push up to a full standing position, bringing the back leg up to meet the front.

  • Reverse the movement slowly back to the kneeling position

Recommendations:

  • Make sure the front foot is flat to ensure a stable base

  • Place toys at different angles for the child to grab encouraging trunk rotation and balance

  • Start by allowing the child to hold onto your hands or furniture, gradually reducing support as they build strength
