Heat (Thermotherapy)

Purpose:

Can increase blood flow and muscle relaxation  

Directions:

Use a warm towel/washcloth or heat pack.  

Warm towel/washcloth 

  • Soak in water, then wring out till its damp but not dripping. 

  • Place in Ziploc bag (unzipped) and microwave for 15 to 60 seconds.  

  • Use another towel or tongs to remove it as it will be VERY HOT. Check for even heat. 

  • If it needs more time, heat in 10 seconds increments as needed. 

Heat pack 

  • Follow instructions based on the specific heating pack for best results. 

  • Begin with 60 seconds  

  • Check the temperature and add additional time as needed. The pack should be comfortably warm to the touch, not scalding.  

  • If more time is needed, microwave in short increments (10 seconds) and check after each time. 

Recommendations:  

  • To ensure safety wrap heated towel/washcloth or heating pack in another dry towel to provide a barrier  

  • Do not overheat towel/washcloth or heating pack (avoid more than 2 to 3 minutes in microwave). 

  • Leave heating pack on for 15 minutes 

  • Do not leave child alone  

  • The heat should always be comfortable, check skin after 5 minutes for any signs of blistering, redness, or burning 

  • DO NOT use on broken or damaged skin  ore each stroke.
