Prone on Wedge

Purpose:

Strengthens the child’s neck, back, and shoulders. The wedge elevates the child’s chest, making it easier to lift their head, improve postural control, and boost visual attention.

Directions:

  • Place a foam wedge/ firm rolled towel on the floor

  • Place the child on their stomach with their chest/upper torso on the wedge. Position their elbows directly under their shoulders at a 90-degree angle.

  • Encourage the child to lift their head and chest up, propping their weight on their elbows.

Recommendations:

  • Place toys, a mirror, or high-contrast items in front of them to encourage holding the position and looking up

  • Ensure the elbows are directly under the shoulders and not out to the sides

  • Start with short duration and increase amount of time as child’s neck and shoulder muscles strengthen
