Ride Tricycle

Purpose:

To practice an activity that uses movement of one leg at a time, similar to walking

Directions:

Have the child ride a tricycle or tricycle- like a wheeled toy. If the child is unable to control the movement, you can push from behind or pull from in front. Move the tricycle yourself for a few feet, asking the child to feel the way the legs move. Then ask the child to keep the tricycle moving after you let go. Encourage the child to try pedaling backward first to get started. If the child’s feet will not stay on the pedals, trying a bandanna scarf around the foot and pedal, being careful it doesn't get caught in the spokes.

Recommendations:

  • Adapted tricycles with trunk supports, seat belts, and foot positioners are commercially available. These will often accommodate children too large for a typical tricycle. Some modifications can also be made to typical tricycles.
